Particle Board Nightstand Makeover

Particle board furniture gets a bad rap. It can definitely be worked with.

step 1 = spray prime

Picture
Wear rubber gloves & spray prime table.
Picture
primer is necessary for paint to stick to particle board.

step 3 = touch up

Picture
While the 1st coat is drying, wrap your paint brush tightly in a rubber glove to keep the brush wet so you can reuse it for the touch up.  When 1st coat is dry, brush paint on areas that need more coverage.

Before

step 2 = paint

Paint w/ cheap bristle brush & gloss white paint to get the brush strokes that give it a hand painted look & character.

step 4 (optional)

Take the glass out of a 16x20 picture frame & use on top of the table. Slide pictures, post cards, etc. under glass.

You can stop there or you can do this...

Picture

step 5 = distress

Picture
Sand edges to give table a distressed look.

step 6 = add reclaimed wood

Distress new wood (with vinegar/steel wool or with stain & paint) to look reclaimed or salvage old wood. Cut wood to size &  use construction adhesive & screws to adhere wood to existing table top. Cut a small chunk or use a scrap to make a drawer pull.
Picture
Picture
To attach the drawer pull, you just screw it right into the drawer front (not into the existing hole--make a new hole slightly to the side of that one so that your screw is in there tightly).

step 7 = seal it!

Picture
Seal it all using polyurethane.   You can also use a wood sealing wax on the wood top to give it more depth & character & shine.

This is what it will look like when it's done!

Did you put the reclaimed wood right over the existing top? I can't tell from the pics. It seems if you do this, you'll be able to see it and it will look funny.

In this case I did put the reclaimed wood on the existing top. The existing top was very thin & I madde the new wood pieces longer & wider than the existing top so you aren't able to see it. It gave me a flat, stable surface to screw into/glue to & looks/function were better than I expected.

I am inspired to paint my cheap 3 leg round particle board bedside table. I had used a small table cloth. I don't like that look any more. I am moving and I don't want to spend money on this if I don't
have to. I will be painting it a light bronze. I paint like I am 3, so I will need to spray paint it.

Awesome! Light bronze is a great choice. All metallics are really in style right now, but they also stand the test of time. Metallics are really neutrals (in my opinion) b/c they are earthy/natural and they look good mixed in with every color I can imagine.
Spray paint is the way to go! Spray paints on the market now are amazing & will stick to anything along with leaving you with a durable finish.
Thanks for checking out this project & sharing yours.
Love,
Sissy

Finally, someone who's not afraid to do a shabby look on particle board!! And your tutorial is easy to follow!
I'm planning on rusticating (not sure that's a word) a plain particle board cupboard. We call it mdf (meduim density fibre board) in New Zealand. I want to give it texture, layers & character, which, after reading your instructions seems much more achievable.
Also agreed with your opinion on metallics & spray paint. They're must haves.
Thank you so much
😊
